PALATE : pleasant, still soft and slightly astringent

~
This is a solid scotch but not as memorable as a lot of the other scotches we’ve reviewed. And that’s all I have to say about that.

Ardbeg Uigeadail

ArdbegArdbeg Uigeadail (NAS)

COLOR: Rust and the color of aged Sauternes
NOSE: An initial blast of beef jerky, wet tobacco, peat…PEAT!! After getting past all of the in your face BBQ’d meats you find vanilla extract, light citrus and creamy caramel
PALATE: Intense peaty introduction opening up to a rich smoked pork, wood charcoal and campfire near the sea.
FINISH: Long lingering finish with layers of smoke. So long in fact that after brushing my teeth and going to bed, I woke up to campfire smoke in my mouth like I’d been smoking a cigar from my wedding night.
~
My initial reaction to the Uigeadail was that I hated it. The intense smoke, peat and bbq’d meats turned me off completely. I pondered, while sitting in a leather chair and with an inquisitive look on my face, and gave it another try. I think that after the opened bottle had a chance to breath and oxidize a little, its intensity calmed down and became palatable. It’s not my main squeeze but I think it’s a great example of a peated, smoky malt. Enjoy.

Springbank

Springbank 10Springbank 10

~

COLOR: greenish peat
NOSE: leather, peat, masked sweetness like fake sugar, masked apple,
PALATE: delayed spices, deli meat but not unpleasant like ardbeg,
FINISH: meaty like ardbeg, slight spice but mostly sandwich meat, bologna

ADD WATER

NOSE: nose is the unchanged devil
PALATE: many much more spice, clean water oddly,
FINISH: a much spicier and meatier finish, pure shite
~

So in the same vein of many other peated Scotches, this Springbank is not as peaty as the Ardbegs but definitely more peaty than the Glenkinchie (barely any) and the Talisker Storm (peaty but palatable). I hope that when we (Scotch n Sniff) take a trip to Scotland, we get overwhelmed by the peat smell and forget how to taste it!

Dalwhinnie 15 year

photo 4(1)

Dalwhinnie 15 year

COLOR: Bright gold
NOSE: Banana, Tangerine and the freshness of green apple
PALATE: Rich and coating, stewed apricots with vanilla and the brightness of the green apple and red delicious shining through
FINISH: Light and enjoyable, creamy with a wisp of light smoke at the end
~
The Dalwhinnie 15 year is a nice interesting dram that opens up slowly but keeps you interested while you look for more flavors within. A nice deal if you can find this for around $50

Ardbeg Corryveckran

Ardbeg Corryveckran
Ardbeg Corryveckran (NAS)

COLOR: crisp gold
NOSE: wet leather, smoke, peat, sandwich meats
PALATE: more wet leather and rubber bands, spiced meat, spices, medicinal oil, salts, full bodied
FINISH: medium in length, heavy of spiced meat
~
Difficult to enjoy thanks to the odd flavors of the scotch. If you’re used to highland or even lowland scotches, this Islay has a character like no other scotch that I’ve had so far. The character is SO different it’s borderline unpleasant. The high alcohol content (surprisingly) isn’t distracting. At 57.1% it really should taste more like alcohol and have more of a burn but not so. If you’re looking to keep your palate fresh for any other scotches in your night, do NOT make this your first.

Glenmorangie Companta

Glenmorangie CompantaGlenmorangie Companta NAS

COLOR: Reddish Gold
NOSE: Chocolate covered cherries, subtle sweetness, mild sherry
PALATE: Cherries, light chocolate, spice, even chocolate covered cherries
FINISH: Long and covered in oranges, wheaty
~
The Companta was a bit of a let down considering the price point.
(Normally $130 at Total Wine but on sale at a store in DC for a hundred bucks)
From Glenmorangie, the Nectar D’or seems to be much more enjoyable with many
more flavors and can be had for thirty dollars less than the Companta on sale… Hmmm…

Yamazaki 12 Year

COLOR: Old Gold
NOSE: Vanilla, peppery, musty with a slight sweet apple
PALATE: Medicinal, light oak with a nice barley and malt base
FINISH: Slight astringence, woodsy
~
The Yamazaki 12 year is a well done interpretation of a Scotch Whisky from the Japanese company Suntory. A great perspective from across the world.

An adventure to Jack Rose in DC

Just a few short days ago, Scotch and Sniff ventured off with some friends to Jack Rose Dining Saloon in DC.

~

JR pano (bro)Boasting over 2000 bottles of whisk(e)y and the largest selection on the North American continent, Jack Rose did not disappoint.

~

JR Front of Building
Located at 2007 18th Street in NW DC, we found Jack Rose to be an awesome location to venture off the beaten path of commonly available scotches.

~

JR Burger
The prices for a plate of food are right in the $14-25 range and there are no need for drinks beyond water, considering the surroundings.

~

JR Flyte

After the waiter takes some notes on the palates of everyone at the table, he takes his notes to a whisky sommelier who then picks a handful of spirits to prepare a flight.

~

JR Inside (j)

But selecting some samples that you might have read about before hand can be fun too!

~

JR Pappy Van Winkle (j)

This 23 year (no longer produced) Pappy Van Winkle did a great job of stealing our scotchy little hearts!

~

JR Blackadder Macallan 1989

Of course this Blackadder Raw Cask Macallan 22 years cask strength beauty didn’t disappoint either…

~

Food, friends, and flights.
What more could you ask for?

Are there some other locations that house scotch worth checking out in DC?
If you happen to know of any, definitely suggest something in the comment section below, tweet us, or message us on IG!

Glenmorangie Lasanta

Glenmorangie LasantaGlenmorangie Lasanta 12

COLOR: Caramelized Honey
NOSE: Rubberball, light scents of leather, cloaked in sherry, mild sweetness
PALATE: spice, full bodied
FINISH: fresh cracked pepper, little salt
~
Finished in Oloroso sherry casks, it shares very little in common with say the Glenfiddich 12 we review last week that is also finished in Oloroso sherry casks. It goes to show that casks may be responsible for the majority of the flavors we taste but not all casks are created equal!

Glenfiddich

Glenfiddich 12Glenfiddich 12
COLOR: honey
NOSE: soft in the alcohol department and
not overpowering at all, wow,
fruit, orange, vanilla, super complex
nose that opens like a kaleidoscope,
frosting appears with water
PALATE: a little light, spicy,
slightly drying, buttery
FINISH: floral, smooth, needs no water
to open the complexities,
pear, hint of spices, gorgeous finish
~
Of all the scotches that Scotch and Sniff have tasted so far, this one is by far the greatest candidate for a beginner to try. It’s surprisingly tasty and complex for a 12 year and contains enough flavors to keep your tongue interested for quite a while as you sip it. Fantastic.
